Buddy in Docs, Slides and Sheets.
Your computer does the work.

A side panel in Google Docs, Slides and Sheets connected to the Buddy app on your computer: ask about the file, write and restyle it in your brand, and approve every change.

Last updated: 7 October 2026

What it does

Open Buddy from the Extensions menu of a document, presentation or spreadsheet and ask in your own words. Buddy can:

  • Answer about the selection or the whole file, and summarise or check it.
  • Write, rewrite, insert and reorganise text, slides and cells. You approve changes before they are applied, and can undo them.
  • Apply your organisation’s design system: fonts, colours, heading styles, slide masters and spreadsheet themes.
  • Use what Buddy has on your computer: your files, connectors and skills.
  • Continue the same conversation in Buddy on your computer.

Requirements

  • Buddy for Mac 1.3.15 or later, signed in with your organisation’s Buddy account.
  • Your Buddy administrator has turned on “Buddy panel in Google Docs, Slides and Sheets” in Buddy’s policies.
  • A Google Workspace account in one of your organisation’s verified domains.

Install and connect

Install Buddy from the Google Workspace Marketplace, or ask your Google Workspace administrator to install it for your organisation. Then, in a file, choose Extensions → Buddy → Open Buddy.

The first time, choose Connect to Buddy. Buddy opens on your computer with a six-digit code: check that it matches the one in the panel and confirm. From then on, the panel connects by itself whenever Buddy is open on your computer.

Privacy and security

The add-on can only see and edit the file where you open it. What you ask travels end-to-end encrypted from the panel to your computer; Buddy’s relay forwards it without being able to read it. Approvals for actions on your computer, such as sending an email, stay in Buddy on your computer unless your organisation decides otherwise.

For administrators

  • In Buddy (Admin → Policies): turn on the panel, keep “Only each person’s Google account” on, and choose whether the panel may approve actions on the computer.
  • In the Google Admin console: allow and install Buddy from Apps → Google Workspace Marketplace apps, for everyone or for organisational units.
  • In Security → API controls → App access control you can mark Buddy as trusted.

Disconnect or remove

Revoke a panel in Buddy (Settings → Google Docs, Slides and Sheets), uninstall the add-on from Extensions → Add-ons → Manage add-ons, or remove its access at myaccount.google.com/permissions.
